4 Super Home Remedies to Soothe Your Sunburn

If you end up with red, swollen, and painful skin after being “overexposed” to the sun, chances are you get sunburn. The affected skin will look different from the surrounding skin areas. The signs of sunburns are likely to occur within 15 minutes on the skin, and in seconds when you are exposed to intense UV areas.

The redness will occur within 30 minutes but generally, it takes 2 to 6 hours to experience it. You will experience pain 6 to 48 hours after exposure. The occurrence of the burn is coupled with peeling for the next 1 to 3 days.

Luckily, sunburn is treatable with a range of medications including OTC topical. Did you know you can treat sunburn at home with some simple remedies? Here’s how…

Aloe Vera:

Aloe vera is packed with anti-inflammatory and skin-healing properties. Since it is high in water content, its cooling effect soothes the burning sensation of aloe vera. It is easy to use.

Peel a fresh aloe leaf to get the gel-like substance. Refrigerate it for nearly 30 hours so that the gel can be set. Apply the gel to the affected parts of the skin. Allow it to dry. It will give the skin enough time to absorb the content of the plant. Afterward, rinse it off with lukewarm water and pat it dry. Use aloe vera gel if the aloe vera plant is not available.

Black Tea:

Black tea has certain antioxidants to promote skin healing. Its tannins protect the skin from UV radiation damage while minimizing inflammation. Plus, it is useful in retrieving the skin’s pH balance.

Let’s find out how to prepare it. Brew 3 tea bags in a pan of hot water. Let it steep for a few minutes. Remove the tea bags and let the liquid cool to room temperature. Apply tea to the affected parts of the skin with a cotton ball. Repeat the process three to four times, as needed.

Baking Soda:

Baking soda contains alkaline and certain antiseptic properties. This is why it is an effective sunburn remedy.

Fill your bathtub with cold water and add one cup of baking soda to it. Stir well. Soak in the water for nearly 15-20 minutes. Later, pat dry with a clean towel. Do it daily till you see improvements.

Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar is an effective home remedy for various skin conditions, including sunburn. It contains aspirin to soothe the signs of pain, itching, and inflammation. Here are the ways to use apple cider vinegar for your sunburn.

  • Apply the vinegar to the skin using cotton balls.
  • Add one cup of apple cider vinegar to your bathtub filled with lukewarm water. Soak in this water for nearly half an hour. It can balance the pH level of sunburned skin while enhancing healing. Repeat this remedy till you see an improvement.

(Warning: Avoid using apple cider vinegar on the broken parts or skin abrasions)

So these are some effective home remedies for sunburn. However, skincare is still essential. Apart from using these remedies, make sure to take care of your skin. For example, you should use a moisturizer to make your skin feel better. Besides, stay hydrated by drinking 8-10 glasses a day.

Using cold compresses is a quick remedy for sunburn inflammation. One more thing—visit your doctor if you don’t see improvement with the remedies.
