HOW TO TREAT SUNBURNS WHILE ON VACATION

No one wants to suffer from sunburn on vacation, but it can be difficult to find immediate relief when you are away from home. TAKE A PAIN RELIEVER:

Use a pain reliever if necessary. If you get a sunburn, get inside right away and treat it with a topical or oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve).

When taken early enough, these drugs may be able to help minimize some of the redness. As your skin recovers, continue to take these medications as needed, as they can help with other sunburn symptoms like pain, fever, and headache.

Baking soda:

When you are told that baking soda adapts to all situations… Even for sunburn! Its antiseptic and soothing properties in case of burns will help you reduce the pain that often accompanies a sunburn. Soak compresses in cool water and baking soda and apply to burned areas. Leave for ten minutes and repeat two to three times a day to soothe and repair the skin.  

 Honey:

The benefits of honey in case of burns are more to be demonstrated. When the skin has reddened due to too long exposure to the sun, or if your skin is clear, you can resort to this treasure from the hive to heal yourself and soothe your epidermis. How does it work?

 On the affected areas, spread a layer of liquid honey and leave for a quarter of an hour then rinse with warm water. For more efficiency, it is advisable to repeat the operation three times a day. This will allow the skin to heal faster. 

Aloe Vera Gel:

A sunburn and you feel like your body is on fire! Painful, they make life hard for us. By the way, remember that it is strongly discouraged to apply ice cubes to sunburn.

On the other hand, have you ever tried aloe vera gel? This plant with strange leaves is filled with jelly that is as rich as it is beneficial for the skin and the body. If you have one at home, open one or more leaves lengthwise depending on the size of the burnt area. Apply the gel, which is none other than the sap, directly to the sunburn. 

WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING:

The worst part about getting sunburned on vacation has to spend the rest of your time indoors. You don’t want to miss out on the pleasure, but once you’ve been burned, further exposure can worsen your condition.

To avoid the risk of getting sunburned, make sure to wear sunscreen for the duration of the trip. Apart from that, wear your sunglasses as well as UVA and UVB protection caps and rash guards. On kayaking and snorkeling adventures, you can wear full wet suits.

Stay Hydrated:

Sunburn causes loss of body water, which is why it is recommended to drink plenty of water! To heal it, your skin needs to be sufficiently hydrated to better withstand the pain, but also because water is the golden rule. The sun dehydrates your body and that’s why after a day at the beach you look tired! 

Get Into the Shade:

Wear lightweight protective clothing and remain out of the sun to help prevent more sunburn – seek shade under an umbrella or a covered porch. If it’s particularly hot outside or you’re feeling particularly uncomfortable, you might choose to spend more time in, the air conditioning.

Know When to Seek Medical Care:

Sunburn can sometimes be so bad that it’s considered a medical emergency. If you encounter any of the following symptoms, travel health experts recommend seeking medical attention right away:

  • Blistering or excruciating skin pain
  • Swelling of the face
  • Fever/Chills
  • Headache
  • Discomfort in the stomach
  • Dehydration can cause dizziness or fainting.
